Healthy Eating Tips and Tricks!

At Street Farm we love to promote healthy eating. Here are our top tips for encouraging and implementing healthy eating at home!

  1. Have regular family meals.

Regular family mealtimes are very important and helpful when promoting healthy eating. Eating together allows your child to see you as a role model when trying new foods, as well as providing them with positive connotations of meal times being fun, time to spend with family and time to enjoy each others company.

  1. Serve a variety of healthy foods and snacks.

We always recommend trying to serve fruits and vegetables into the daily routine, aiming for the goal of at least five servings a day.

Children often like to choose their own food and snacks and will do so at home. It is important to offer a range of healthy options they can choose from, giving them the freedom of choice but sticking to a healthy diet. It is a good idea to limit the amount of sugary and processed foods and drinks.

  1. Be a role model by eating healthy yourself.

The best way for you to encourage healthy eating is to eat well yourself. Children will follow the lead of the adults they see every day.

Another way to be a good role model is to serve appropriate portions and not overeat as well as using positive language surrounding food and meal times.

  1. Make meal times fun!

When promoting healthy eating it is important to make meal times fun. Whether it’s allowing your child to help pick the foods you eat, prepare meals or make art with their food, there are many ways they can be involved and promote healthy choices.

  1. Talk about it and educate yourself!

When preparing meals or sitting together to eat, talk about the food you are enjoying. Educate your children on what their food is, where it comes from and why we eat it. Discuss the benefits of certain foods and how they can help our health. This will encourage your child to think positively about food and encourage them to think more about what they choose to eat.
